![]() Since the strategy here, as throughout Love and Death is to foreground the theme of male companionship in American literature, Fiedler’s verdict on the women in Hemingwa’s fiction is hyperbolic, but that, perhaps, is a price worth paying for the perception that ‘the West’ in Hemingway is not limited to the geographical West of the United States but is a ‘world of male companionship and sport, an anti-civilization’ whether in the mountains of Spain or the hills of Africa. ![]() Hemingway, he believed, was much addicted to describing the sexual act in his fictions - it is the ‘symbolic center of his work’ 1 - but since he did not succeed in making his females human, the sexual encounters described in his writings are either ridiculous or horrible the ‘women’ are fantasy figures whose function is to gratify the men’s desires, and the act is nothing more than a wish-fulfilment or, in Fiedler’s brutally frank words, a wet dream. The ‘however’ was central to Fiedler’s argument. ![]() ![]() ‘There are, however, no women in his books!’ wrote Leslie Fiedler in Love and Death in the American Novel (1960). ![]()

Brief Summary of Book: Burning Chrome by William Gibson ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() While the city of Paris takes in most of the heat, the quiet village of Carriveau is on the brink of changing forever. The Nightingale also develops the story of two courageous sisters who, ironically, get to come together to join forces in a time when hope, faith, and unity are lost. She uses the small town of Carriveau as a main setting that dramatically contrasts with the evil that is about to come to a country that has surrendered to the Nazis, and is now being occupied. New York Times Best Selling Author Kristin Hannah exposes in The Nightingale the horrors of World War II in France. This is a Summary & Analysis of The Nightingale. ![]() The Nightingale: by Kristin Hannah | Summary & Analysis ![]() ![]() And I just don't want any of that all up in my business. I mean, Jesus, think about the fucking stickiness and the sand and my god, the BUGS. I hate the idea of women reading this book and thinking that damn, they have never eaten mangoes naked whilst living alone on a desert island, so they must be missing some fundamental pieces of what makes them alive and powerful and fabulous. The point is, there is no one size fits all approach to living an authentic and awesome life that makes you happy. Some women find stripping fun and empowering or like the money or ANYTHING. Not every woman finds her true self (or whatever) in wearing a wacky hat or bold colors. Maybe a woman can't/won't/doesn't have the means/doesn't feel safe/doesn't fucking want to go on vacation alone, or walking at midnight, or (I'm paraphrasing) frolicking naked in a field of organic sage. You do what makes you happy, I'll do what makes me happy, and we'll be nice to each other and supportive and authentic. ![]() But I have a few issues.įor one, my brand of feminism is that every woman can choose what her best life involves without judgement or criticism. I know she meant it - and I took it - as a compliment, and there are a some good ideas and thoughts within. A friend lent me this book because she said it reminded her of me. ![]() ![]() DiMercurio's matter-of-fact style squeezes much of the tension out of the story, and some readers may find his characters' sub-speak awfully dry. ![]() The initial confrontation with Japan leaves Pacino in charge of a minimal fleet against overwhelming odds, but a lone, specially armed American sub may save the day?if it can reach the Sea of China in time. All this takes place early in the next century, as the first female president follows the lead of a returning DiMercurio hero, the maverick Admiral Michael Pacino, in agreeing to the step that puts the world at the brink of war. blockade of Japan and a confrontation between the U.S. When those means backfire, events escalate into a U.N. Especially impressive here are the futuristic methods employed by a Japanese spy infiltrating a new nation's atomic missile site, and the unique means employed by Japan to try to render that site useless. ![]() As a former officer of the USS Hammerhead, DiMercurio knows his submarines, and the high-tech detail that he brings to his fourth undersea thriller (after Phoenix Sub Zero) should delight fans of the genre. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Kirill, a leader within the Bratva is strategic and looking to rule the world. Kirill, the captain in the army is strategic and passionate about his men. ![]() While meeting Kirill through other’s eyes in the past I wasn’t sure what to think of him, but now that I’ve gotten the chance to know him I love the monster that hides behind his glasses. Her identity needs to stay hidden and while Kirill doesn’t know why, he keeps her secret as a keeper of secrets himself. Her background is shrouded in mystery and yet from what we come to know she is one of the most determined and strong women Rina has ever written. A mix between Mulan and Anastasia, Sasha’s story was emotional, raw, and gripping. I never fail to fall deeply in love with each new book, making a new favorite couple every single time.īlood of my Monster is the beginning of Kirill and Sasha’s story. Her worlds are rich and I love how she winds them together just enough to find easter eggs, but every new couple is unique and completely stands on their own. The way she weaves her plot and stitches in every sinful description or small tidbit, I completely gobble it all up like the starving reader I am. There is nothing I love better than digging into the backstory of one of Rina’s characters. Rina Kent is queen for a reason and her monsters are deliciously supreme!! Wow! Explosive! Addictive! Couldn’t put it down once I began!
